The doll includes loose clothing for reduced fabric-to-skin contact, an eye gaze slightly averted to mimic tendencies of avoiding direct eye contact, a pink fidget spinner for stress relief and focus enhancement, and noise-cancelling headphones to mitigate sensory overload from background sounds.
Mattel, the creators, expressed that the doll aims to allow more children to see themselves reflected in Barbie. The design process involved collaboration with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) to gather insights directly from the autistic community on the doll’s essential characteristics.
ASAN hailed the doll as a significant representation milestone, emphasizing the importance of authentic and joyful portrayals for young autistic individuals. The doll’s features, such as moveable elbows and wrists for sensory processing and excitement expression, and a pink tablet symbolizing digital communication aids, were highlighted by the creators.
Autistic writer Ellie Middleton praised the doll as a powerful symbol of acceptance for young girls, highlighting the significance of representation for autistic individuals. The National Autistic Society (NAS) reminded that autism varies across individuals, with diverse strengths and challenges.
NAS described autism as a lifelong neurodivergence and disability influencing individuals’ interactions with the world. They estimated that over 700,000 autistic adults and children reside in the UK, emphasizing the importance of accurate and inclusive representations for autism awareness and acceptance.
Mattel’s initiative in creating diverse dolls, including the autistic Barbie, aligns with their commitment to inclusivity.
