Five years ago today, a large group of Donald Trump’s supporters forcefully entered the US Capitol, aiming to overturn the outcome of the 2020 election through violent means. This action was incited by a speech from Trump, urging them to “fight like hell” or risk losing their country. Today, Trump is back in power, disregarding established laws and regulations that ensure global security.

Reflecting on the events of January last year, some individuals who once downplayed Trump’s actions as mere rhetoric are now reevaluating their stance. The UK Government, for instance, seemed to align with a strategy of engaging with Trump despite his controversial behavior, a decision that may now be questioned.

In a recent address to Republican members of Congress, Trump controversially suggested the idea of canceling US elections, coincidentally marking the anniversary of the January 6th insurrection. He expressed frustration about competing against Democrats and hinted at the possibility of scrapping the electoral process, although he anticipated backlash for such a proposal.

Notably, this is not the first instance where Trump hinted at extending his term beyond legality. During a previous interaction with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump speculated about the potential to remain in power if the US were engaged in a conflict near the end of his term, raising concerns about his commitment to democratic principles.

In the same speech, Trump made inaccurate claims about his electoral victories and pondered on his eligibility to run in future elections. These statements, combined with his unconventional behavior, have sparked criticism and speculation about his intentions.

Meanwhile, Trump’s administration has also faced scrutiny over its foreign policy, particularly regarding Greenland. When questioned about potentially acquiring Greenland through force, Trump’s Deputy, Stephen Miller, evaded a direct response, emphasizing a desire for Greenland to be part of the United States. This stance drew criticism from European leaders, who affirmed Greenland’s sovereignty and rejected any attempts to undermine it.

In another development, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has yet to engage with Trump following a recent incident in Venezuela. Trump’s decision to appoint an acting president in Venezuela based on personal motives rather than democratic processes has raised eyebrows and fueled speculation about his political maneuvers.

Trump’s contentious actions have not only stirred domestic tensions but also triggered international concerns about his willingness to adhere to democratic norms. As the political landscape continues to evolve, observers remain vigilant of Trump’s unpredictable behavior and its potential implications on global affairs.
