A medical professional has issued a warning to households utilizing log burners. Dr. Sam Watts, a respected figure with an extensive background in medicine from the University of Southampton, regularly shares health advice on social media. In a recent Instagram post, he emphasized that while log burners can be a safe heating choice, they can also present risks if not operated correctly. Dr. Watts pointed out four key issues with log burners that may indicate potential safety concerns.

He clarified that modern log-burning stoves are designed as sealed systems, ensuring that combustion gases are directed up the flue and not into the living space when used properly. Indoor air quality studies have shown that in homes with certified stoves, dry wood, and adequate ventilation, particulate levels remain within safe limits comparable to everyday activities like cooking.

The main concern highlighted by Dr. Watts is not the log burners themselves but rather their misuse, which includes using old or non-compliant stoves, damp wood, smoldering fires, and blocked flues. The popularity of log burners is on the rise, with the introduction of Defra Smoke Exempt Appliances meeting stringent emission standards set by the UK government.

Using inappropriate wood types not only damages stoves and chimneys but also violates air pollution regulations, leading to fines of up to £1,000 for offenders. Repeat violators may face court penalties of up to £5,000. In response to harmful emissions, the government banned the sale of wet wood and house coal in 2021. Additionally, Defra’s ‘Ready to Burn’ scheme certifies wood with moisture content below 20% to help consumers identify safe options.

Dr. Watts emphasized that when used correctly, modern log burners are a safe and efficient heating solution relied upon by many households worldwide. He stressed the importance of understanding the full science behind log burner use to dispel misconceptions about their safety. Properly utilized log burners are not a health risk but a technology that requires responsible operation.
