A delay occurred during a match at the Australian Open when a ball kid vomited on the court. Greek player Stefano Tsitsipas was up against Japan’s Shintaro Mochizuki in the initial round on Tuesday. Mochizuki claimed the first set at 6-4, but Tsitsipas fought back to secure the second set at 6-3. As they were about to start the third set, a ball kid fell ill at the rear of the court, causing a disturbance in the crowd.
The game was promptly halted, and medical personnel attended to the affected ball kid while Tsitsipas and Mochizuki retreated to their seats. This incident followed shortly after Naomi Osaka’s match against Antonia Ruzic was suspended at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. TNT Sports’ commentators were initially perplexed by the interruption of the Mochizuki and Tsitsipas match.
After a brief break, the court was cleaned, and the game resumed with Tsitsipas winning the subsequent two sets at 6-2, setting up a second-round encounter with Czech player Tomas Machac. Unfortunately, this was not the first instance of a ball kid falling ill at this year’s tournament.
Earlier in the week, another ball kid collapsed during the Zeynep Sonmez and Ekaterina Alexandrova match. Sonmez swiftly assisted the girl, helping her back on her feet and guiding her to a shaded area. Play resumed shortly after. Sonmez recounted the incident, emphasizing the importance of being compassionate.
TNT commentator Catherine Whitaker praised Sonmez for her prompt action, highlighting her attentiveness to the ball kid’s well-being. The incidents involving the ball kids have sparked concerns at the Australian Open, raising questions about the players’ physical well-being during the competition.
