A man with a history of rent payment issues has been arrested for allegedly murdering his brother in a violent stabbing incident over rent collection. Thomas Campbell, aged 59, was taken into custody and charged with murder after the death of his brother, Erik Campbell, aged 53, in Gary, Indiana. The altercation arose when Erik visited Thomas’s home to collect rent on behalf of their mother, leading to a heated argument between the siblings.
The dispute escalated into a physical altercation, during which Thomas wielded a knife and inflicted multiple stab wounds on Erik. Police reports, citing court records and surveillance footage, revealed the intense confrontation over the rent payment. Erik was seen confronting Thomas about unpaid rent and demanding to see what he had in his hoodie pocket. Despite Erik’s attempts to disarm his brother, Thomas allegedly produced a knife and proceeded to stab him multiple times, causing severe injuries to his arm, neck, chest, and stomach.
Erik succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital. Thomas, who called 911 for his brother, claimed self-defense, alleging that Erik had threatened him with a gun. The scene depicted Thomas covered in blood on his porch, with Erik lying unresponsive beside him. No firearm was discovered at the location, but witnesses recalled Thomas stabbing Erik in the front yard before recovering a bloodied knife nearby.
According to police statements, Thomas claimed he acted in self-defense, believing Erik was reaching for a weapon. He admitted to continuing to stab his brother after blacking out, citing longstanding issues of bullying. Detectives revealed that the tension between the brothers had been escalating for two decades, with their mother mentioning Thomas’s reluctance to pay rent.
Thomas Campbell faces murder charges and is currently held at Lake County Jail without bond. His court appearance is scheduled for January 12, where he could potentially receive a 65-year prison sentence if convicted.
