A fresh weather advisory for snow and ice has been released by the Met Office, encompassing 40 regions. The new yellow alert for snow and ice spans much of Scotland and the northern parts of England, effective from 8 pm until 12 pm tomorrow. This warning supplements others covering most of the country for snow, ice, wind, and rain as Storm Goretti approaches with gusts potentially reaching 100mph.

In addition to the yellow warnings, there is an amber warning for snow in central regions of England and Wales, running from 8 pm tonight until 9 am tomorrow. The latest warning indicates the likelihood of widespread ice formation as surfaces freeze again during the evening and overnight. Wintry showers are expected to move inland across parts of northern England and eastern Scotland, possibly leading to modest snow accumulations of a few centimeters inland and on higher ground.

The adverse weather conditions, characterized by heavy snowfall and gale force winds from Storm Goretti, are attributed to a “weather bomb.” This phenomenon, also known as explosive cyclogenesis, occurs when the central pressure in a low-pressure area drops rapidly. The Met Office highlighted that winds during a weather bomb can be forceful enough to topple trees and cause structural damage.

Forecasted by the BBC, Storm Goretti is expected to experience a pressure drop of 36 millibars within 24 hours from 6 pm on Wednesday to 6 pm on Thursday. The Met Office described the storm, named by Meteo France, as a “multi-hazard event,” with the potential for up to 30cm of snow in parts of the UK.

Anticipated to impact the South West significantly, including Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, an amber warning is in effect from 4 pm to 11 pm today. Additionally, a yellow warning for wind has been issued for the entire south coast, forecasting gusts of up to 60mph.

Met Office Chief Forecaster Neil Armstrong emphasized the diverse impacts of Storm Goretti, stating that significant snowfall is expected in Wales and the Midlands, with very strong winds affecting the far southwest. He advised individuals in warning areas to stay updated with forecasts and local authority messages due to the complex severe weather conditions.

The storm is likely to bring snow to Wales and the Midlands, with accumulations of 10-15cm widely and up to 20-30cm in some areas, especially on higher terrain in Wales and the Peak District. An Amber warning has been issued for Thursday night into Friday morning, highlighting the potential for severe disruption.
