Labour’s metropolitan mayors have voiced their support for the mayor of Minneapolis following the recent controversial ICE shooting incident. Mayor Jacob Frey gained attention for his swift reaction to the shooting, where he demanded ICE to leave Minnesota immediately.

Newly surfaced video footage from the ICE agent’s perspective contradicts claims by Donald Trump and JD Vance, suggesting that the victim, Renee Good, posed a threat to the agent. The video shows Good attempting to drive away when she was shot multiple times by the agent, who then used offensive language towards her.

In a joint statement, Labour’s metro mayors praised Mayor Frey and other US mayors for their compassionate leadership in times of tragedy, emphasizing their commitment to upholding human rights and dignity in their communities.

The statement, signed by prominent mayors including Sadiq Khan of London and Andy Burnham of Manchester, commended the mayors for their approach based on facts and empathy rather than fear and aggression.

Protesters gathered outside a Minneapolis hotel believed to house ICE agents, disrupting their rest in response to the shooting incident. Despite claims by JD Vance and Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin that the officer acted in self-defence, the newly released video does not support this assertion.

Mayor Frey dismissed any self-defence justifications for the shooting as unfounded. Policing experts noted that while the video did not change their perspective on the use of force, it raised concerns about the officer’s training and decision-making during the incident.

The video analysis indicated that the officers did not perceive Good as a threat, questioning the officer’s actions and response to the situation. The officer involved, a 43-year-old veteran with experience in law enforcement agencies, has been at the center of previous incidents involving use of force.

Overall, the support for Mayor Frey and the scrutiny of the ICE shooting incident continue to draw attention and debate on law enforcement practices and accountability.
