Snooker legend John Virgo’s unexpected death at the age of 79 has been attributed to a ruptured aorta, as confirmed by a close source to the family. Known for his triumphs in the 1970s and 1980s, including winning the 1979 UK Championship, Virgo gained widespread fame in the 1990s for co-hosting Big Break alongside comedian Jim Davidson.

Renowned as the voice of snooker, Virgo had a distinguished commentary career on the BBC, where his iconic catchphrase “where’s the cue ball going?” became synonymous with his broadcasting style. Following his passing, his wife Rosie expressed deep sorrow, highlighting their nearly 16-year marriage and describing him as her beloved partner and best friend.

Virgo, who resided in Spain with Rosie, leaves behind a legacy cherished by his family and friends, including his son Gary and daughter Brook-Leah from previous marriages. Tributes poured in from the snooker community, with fellow players like Ronnie O’Sullivan and Stephen Hendry expressing their profound sadness at the loss of a dear friend and esteemed colleague. Colleague Jim Davidson also paid homage to Virgo’s exceptional talent and vibrant personality, acknowledging his significant contributions to the world of snooker.

In 2020, Virgo and Rosie relocated to Spain in search of relief for Virgo’s long-standing neck injury, hoping for improved health in the warmer climate of Costa del Sol. Virgo’s memory lives on through his family, friends, and the enduring impact he made on the sport of snooker.
