Kremlin’s affirmation of deploying the advanced hypersonic Oreshnik missile during the recent aggressive action in Ukraine appears to be linked to the strategic interactions between Putin and Trump. Moscow justified the assault as retaliation to an alleged strike on President Putin’s Russian residence by Ukraine, a claim refuted by both Washington and Kyiv. This dispute over the alleged attack has escalated tensions between the Trump administration and Moscow, exacerbated by the US military intercepting the Russian-flagged oil tanker Marinera, previously known as Bella 1.

The Russian Ministry of Defence stated that the attack, resulting in casualties and injuries, was in response to what they described as a terrorist assault on the Russian President’s residence. The operation involved a significant strike using various precision-guided weapons, including the Oreshnik medium-range ground-mobile missile system. Despite labeling the incident as terrorism, the actual impact of the attack, including the use of the Oreshnik missile among nearly 300 other weapons, remains uncertain.

While explosions were reported in Lviv, the emphasis on deploying the hypersonic ballistic Oreshnik missile by Moscow appears to be more symbolic than practical. President Putin’s motive seems to be to widen the divide between the Trump administration and NATO, particularly by underscoring the importance of Greenland acquisition for the US. The potential threat posed by hypersonic missiles has garnered attention from the Pentagon, as the US seeks to enhance its capabilities in detecting and countering such weapons more effectively.

The recent assault on Ukraine resulted in widespread disruptions, leaving many without power or heating, causing fear among civilians. The use of the Oreshnik missile could be interpreted as a subtle message to Trump, highlighting the perceived necessity for Greenland acquisition and amplifying tensions within NATO. The escalating rift between the US and NATO allies, notably the UK, underscores the growing complexity of international relations.

The actions taken by Russia may indicate a sense of urgency on the part of its leadership to exploit divisions within NATO and assert dominance in the geopolitical arena.
