A criminal known as “Ali G” who utilized encrypted messaging to facilitate the illegal trade of drugs and firearms has been sentenced to six years and nine months in prison. Allan Hughes, 30, hailing from Clydebank in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, was apprehended after a significant investigation by the Organised Crime Partnership, comprising the National Crime Agency (NCA) and Police Scotland.
In June 2024, Hughes was caught in the act of exchanging packages containing £15,000 in cash and half a kilo of heroin with another individual. Prior to his arrest, law enforcement officials had seized several of his electronic devices, discovering a plethora of messages on encrypted platforms, along with incriminating images and videos showcasing firearms, ammunition, and narcotics intended for sale.
Hughes pleaded guilty to charges of serious organized crime at the High Court in Glasgow in November 2025. He was handed down the sentence today and will also be subjected to a Serious Crime Prevention Order (SCPO) for three years, in addition to serving time for other drug-related offenses.
Philip Marshall, Regional Head of Investigations at the NCA, condemned Hughes’ actions, emphasizing that his illicit activities posed a significant threat to public safety. Marshall highlighted the dangerous consequences of individuals like Hughes who profit from selling firearms and ammunition without regard for the potential harm they cause.
Detective Chief Inspector Laura Sands from the Organised Crime and Counter Terrorism Unit reiterated the commitment to combating serious organized crime, urging the public to report any information related to criminal activities. The collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies aim to ensure that individuals involved in such illegal endeavors are brought to justice.
