Celebrated writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has accused a hospital of neglecting her one-year-old son, leading to his death after a brief illness.

Ms. Adichie’s representatives confirmed the passing of her son, Nkanu Nnamdi, expressing deep sorrow over the loss. The author blamed Euracare Hospital in Lagos, Nigeria, for the tragic event that occurred on January 6.

According to Ms. Adichie, her son’s untimely death was a result of alleged negligence at the hospital. She claimed that inadequate monitoring post-administration of a sedative led to her son’s unresponsiveness, necessitating resuscitation.

Following resuscitation, the child was placed on a ventilator and admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit. Unfortunately, he passed away after experiencing seizures and a cardiac arrest.

Euracare Hospital refuted the allegations of negligence, expressing condolences to Ms. Adichie and her family for their loss. They defended their reputation as a leading medical center with a skilled clinical team.

The hospital clarified that the patient was critically ill upon arrival and received appropriate care in line with established medical standards. Despite their efforts, the patient passed away within 24 hours of admission, prompting an investigation to ensure adherence to best practices.

Euracare Hospital emphasized their commitment to transparency, patient safety, and supporting the grieving family during this difficult time. They assured cooperation with regulatory processes while respecting the family’s privacy.
