Android users are being cautioned about a new cyber threat that demands attention. The recent menace, known as DroidLock, is causing concern as it locks phones once infiltrated, coercing users to pay a ransom or risk permanent file loss.
The security experts at Zimperium discovered DroidLock, impacting Android users primarily in parts of Europe. The malware is spread through malicious websites that promote counterfeit applications mimicking genuine software. Once installed, DroidLock seizes control over devices, monitoring screen unlock codes.
Subsequently, hackers can alter the code, locking users out. Victims are then presented with a ransom demand to prevent file deletion, accompanied by a countdown timer for compliance. Zimperium stated, “The ZLabs research team has identified a new threat campaign targeting Android users.”
Described as ransomware, DroidLock spreads through phishing websites, employing deceptive system update screens to deceive victims. It can remotely control devices, acquire app lock credentials, and exploit device administrator privileges to erase data and capture images using the front camera.
Although DroidLock has not reached the UK yet, Android users must remain cautious. It is crucial to only download applications from official sources like Google’s Play Store. Individuals urged to download software from websites are advised to verify the developer’s authenticity and avoid suspicious downloads.
