Black Friday is swiftly approaching, and while shoppers across the UK are eagerly eyeing dropping prices, scammers have set their sights on a different target. As millions of packages are expected to traverse the postal network in the upcoming weeks, cybercriminals are taking advantage of the frenzy to deliver harmful scams right to people’s doorsteps.

Recent reports from various UK publications have highlighted a significant rise in a deceptive technique known as “quishing,” where criminals hide phishing attacks within QR codes. This method is now being combined with a revamped brushing scam, becoming more aggressive as Black Friday approaches.

Technology expert Theodore Ullrich from Tomorrow Lab has observed a surge in this scam due to consumers anticipating deliveries. He explains that when individuals are tracking multiple orders, they are more likely to trust an unexpected package at their door, which is exactly what fraudsters exploit as a vulnerable moment to execute their scheme.

Ullrich emphasizes that receiving an unsolicited parcel is not merely an inconvenience but can lead to a serious breach. Scammers capitalize on people’s curiosity by enticing them to scan QR codes that direct them to phishing websites, aiming to extract personal and financial information swiftly.

The expert warns that scammers are becoming bolder as personal information is increasingly accessible online, making it easier for them to create convincing fraudulent packages. He cautions that with the upcoming Black Friday shopping spree, there is a heightened risk of falling victim to these scams amidst the flurry of deliveries and online orders.

To combat such schemes, Ullrich advises recipients to verify unexpected parcels directly with the company through official channels and avoid using any contact information provided on the package, as scammers often control those details. He stresses the importance of taking unusual deliveries seriously and recommends changing passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and monitoring transactions vigilantly to safeguard against potential financial losses.

In conclusion, Ullrich underscores the necessity of being cautious, avoiding impulsive actions, and questioning any suspicious QR codes or unexpected packages. Staying vigilant and maintaining a level-headed approach can help individuals thwart scammers’ attempts and protect their identities and finances during the shopping season.
