Westminster had been overshadowed by the impending Budget for an extended period, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty.

However, on Wednesday evening, a lively gathering took place at Parliament’s Strangers Bar, with MPs, ministers, and Government aides coming together to celebrate. A minister expressed, “This is a positive day, and it deserves to be acknowledged with a toast.”

Labour had been facing challenges lately, with ongoing discussions about Keir Starmer’s leadership, internal unrest, and declining poll numbers. Despite a turbulent lead-up and the unexpected disclosure of crucial details by a watchdog, the Chancellor presented a Budget that offered hope to struggling households.

Labour members welcomed the measures to assist families grappling with the cost of living, particularly the elimination of the two-child benefit cap, projected to uplift 450,000 children out of poverty. They anticipated criticism from conservative factions regarding the Chancellor’s £26 billion tax initiative but remained optimistic.

An MP conveyed to the Mirror, “Addressing child poverty must be central to the Labour Party’s agenda; that’s who we are. While we anticipate opposition claiming there are simple solutions to complex issues, this week allows us to stand tall.”

The Budget primarily focused on stabilizing public finances and maintaining market stability. Despite some minor controversies, there is ongoing debate about whether Ms. Reeves provided accurate information about the scale of the fiscal deficit.

Efforts were made by the Government to mend strained relations with its MPs and dispel uncertainties about the future of the Prime Minister and the Chancellor. At present, these efforts seem successful. When questioned about the security of the PM and Chancellor’s positions post-Budget, another MP affirmed, “Yes, they are secure… for now.”

Another backbencher commented, “The reception has been positive. The Budget appeased concerns from the left while maintaining support from the right. The strategic moves, including the emphasis on being a Labour Chancellor and the display of socialist values, resonated well with us.”

Regarding the Chancellor’s position, they added, “She is secure, I see no issues there.”

A different MP remarked, “Achieving market stability and retaining support from both left-leaning backbenchers in a single Budget, all while creating additional fiscal space, is truly commendable.”

Sharon Hodgson, the MP for Washington and Gateshead South, praised the Budget as a significant demonstration of what a Labour Government can achieve, expressing pride in Rachel’s handling of a challenging situation.

Downing Street emphasized the Prime Minister’s strong commitment to supporting struggling families, as highlighted in an exclusive interview with the Mirror last week.
