Winnipeg resident Jackson Tachinski expressed deep emotions as Canada’s men’s flag football team made history during the recent IFAF World Flag Football Championships in Dusseldorf, Germany. Tachinski and his team secured the bronze medal by defeating Mexico 34-26 in a thrilling match that ended in overtime with a crucial interception by Guillaume Béland.

This victory not only earned Canada a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where flag football will debut as an event, but also left Tachinski overwhelmed with the experience. Describing the moment as indescribable and surreal, he reflected on the emotional impact of the game-changing interception.

Looking ahead to the Olympics, Tachinski expressed eagerness at the prospect of representing Canada on such a prestigious stage. His sentiments were echoed by Blue Bombers head coach Mike O’Shea, who commended both the men’s and women’s flag football teams for their outstanding achievements.

Joining the men’s team in Olympic qualification, Canada’s women’s team secured their spot by defeating the U.S. 27-20 to complete an undefeated run, with quarterback Sara Parker named the tournament’s most valuable player. The success of both teams has garnered widespread pride and support, with CFL and NFL players set to participate in flag football at the 2028 Olympics.

In light of the upcoming event, Blue Bombers receiver Nic Demski, a Winnipeg native, expressed openness to the idea of vying for a spot on the Olympic team. The allure of competing on a national stage for one’s country was highlighted as a unique opportunity that transcends professional football.

Head coach Paul LaPolice, with ties to Winnipeg, emphasized the current team’s accomplishments while acknowledging the potential for CFL and NFL additions in the future. He emphasized the excitement surrounding the team’s success and the need for careful consideration in shaping the roster for the Olympics.

The appeal of flag football lies in its accessibility and dynamic gameplay, as noted by LaPolice, who highlighted the sport’s engaging nature with its emphasis on passing and creativity on the field. Football Manitoba CEO Bill Johnson emphasized the growing popularity of flag football, attributing its appeal to the athleticism and skill displayed by players at all levels. The recent Olympic qualifications are expected to further elevate the sport’s profile and attract more participants and supporters.
