The Canadian Elite Basketball League has reverted to a single-game championship format following a decision made in collaboration with the Winnipeg Sea Bears and Brampton Honey Badgers. The best-of-three final was abruptly halted due to unsafe playing conditions caused by court condensation. The league prioritized the safety of players, officials, and fans, leading to the cancellation of the initial game.
The one-game championship match is now scheduled to take place in Winnipeg on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET, broadcasted live on CBC-TV, CBCSports.ca, and CBC Gem. This decision marks a return to the traditional format used in previous years.
Brampton initially took a 6-0 lead before the game interruption, with the Sea Bears catching up shortly after. The championship series, which was supposed to be a best-of-three, was deemed unfeasible to complete within the original timeframe, resulting in the shift to a single-game final for fairness and practicality.
In a statement, Honey Badgers CEO Al Whitley expressed regret over the cancellation of the game. The two teams had previously met twice this season, with Brampton claiming victory in both encounters.
The Honey Badgers, who secured a CEBL title in 2022, are now one win away from potentially clinching another championship. The Sea Bears defied odds in the playoffs, defeating strong contenders like the Saskatoon Mamba and the Vancouver Bandits to reach the final.
The upcoming championship game will not only showcase thrilling on-court action but also highlight an intriguing off-court narrative, as both teams are owned by siblings – David Asper leading the Sea Bears and Leonard Asper heading the Honey Badgers.
