Experiencing a common cold symptom might indicate the presence of long Covid. While most individuals recover from a coronavirus infection within a few weeks after initial symptoms, some may endure a more prolonged and severe illness, known as long Covid or post-COVID syndrome, if their symptoms persist for over 12 weeks, as highlighted by the NHS.

The exact nature of long Covid remains unclear, with ongoing research as this relatively new condition is studied. Diagnosing long Covid can be challenging due to the varying symptom presentation among individuals.

Symptoms associated with long Covid can differ widely, leading many to mistake them for common cold or flu symptoms. For instance, symptoms like a sore throat and runny nose could indicate either a cold or long Covid, depending on their duration.

Given the diverse symptomatology of long Covid, individuals suspecting they may have it are advised to consult their GP for evaluation. Typically, the GP will inquire about the symptoms’ duration and nature to aid in making a diagnosis.

Additional tests, such as blood tests, heart rate, and blood oxygen level measurements, may be conducted by the GP to exclude other potential causes of the symptoms. Referral for further investigations like an ECG or X-ray, possibly through a post-COVID syndrome service team, may also be recommended.
