The Conservative Party has faced criticism for defending one of their frontbenchers who is representing Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich in a legal battle, with Justice minister Jake Richards calling it a “clear conflict of interest”. Richards highlighted the role of shadow attorney general David Wolfson in Abramovich’s legal case and criticized the party’s response as weak.

Wolfson’s involvement in Abramovich’s legal dispute with the Jersey government, regarding assets worth over £5.3 billion, has raised concerns. Additionally, the UK government is seeking over £2.5 billion from Abramovich for the benefit of Ukraine. Labour leader Keir Starmer has issued an ultimatum to Abramovich regarding the funds from the sale of Chelsea Football Club to aid Ukraine.

Richards emphasized the conflict of interest arising from Wolfson’s dual roles of representing Abramovich while advising on Russia-Ukraine policies. He suggested that Wolfson should either step down from his shadow cabinet position or cease representing Abramovich. Richards also questioned Boris Johnson’s stance on Ukraine in light of the situation.

The Ukraine Solidarity Campaign expressed alarm over Wolfson’s actions, questioning the Conservative Party’s alignment with Russia and Nigel Farage. They urged emergency legislation to prevent sanctioned individuals from exploiting the legal system. Despite Abramovich’s intentions to use frozen funds for humanitarian causes related to the Ukraine conflict, the issue remains unresolved.

In a letter to Kemi Badenoch, Richards highlighted the compromised position of Wolfson due to his financial ties to Abramovich. He emphasized the importance of avoiding conflicts of interest in political matters. The Tories defended Wolfson, stating that he is not involved in the Chelsea FC matter and criticized Labour’s attack as political posturing.

The Conservative Party reaffirmed its support for Ukraine and criticized Labour for what they deemed as hypocrisy. They emphasized their commitment to the Ukrainian cause and dismissed allegations of aligning with Russia.
