Lucy Letby, a convicted baby killer, marked her 36th birthday in prison at HMP Bronzefield without any celebratory gestures, including a cake. Letby, serving multiple life sentences for taking the lives of seven infants, spent her birthday amidst a group of fellow inmates, such as notorious criminals Sara Sharif killer Beniash Batool and child sex ringleader Marie Black. Despite receiving letters from devoted supporters, Letby’s barrister, Mark McDonald, described her birthday as “bleak” and her overall prison life as a “bleak existence.”

According to McDonald, Letby has been receiving letters and cards from individuals who continue to support her while she serves her sentence, even as the parents of her victims mourn their loss. Supporters have maintained Letby’s innocence, citing evidence from a panel of experts alleging that the deaths of the babies were due to inadequate medical care and natural causes.

However, these claims have faced criticism, with one parent dismissing them as a “publicity stunt.” The parent expressed disappointment, stating that the panel’s actions were disrespectful and unnecessary, as they trust the British justice system and the jury’s decision on the case.

McDonald emphasized the importance of expert reports in proving Letby’s innocence and expressed hope that the latest reports would help secure her release from prison. He reiterated Letby’s consistent assertion of innocence since the accusations were made against her, maintaining that she did not commit the crimes she was convicted of.

McDonald also pointed out that a panel of neonatologists had previously concluded that no crime had occurred at the hospital where Letby worked, attributing the deaths to systemic issues within the unit. Despite Letby being convicted of injecting air into babies’ bloodstreams, earning her the moniker “angel of death,” McDonald controversially claimed that she “loves children.”
