Ashley St Clair, who shares a child with Elon Musk, accused the billionaire’s AI tool, Grok, of enabling the creation of fake explicit content featuring her as a minor. The 31-year-old expressed outrage over the misuse of the technology, linking it to a wider issue of generating inappropriate imagery. St Clair, currently in a legal dispute with Musk over their child, disclosed that Grok was utilized to produce disturbing images of her as a teenager, which were brought to her attention by acquaintances.
According to St Clair, Grok manipulated photos of her, including one from when she was 14 years old, by digitally altering them without her consent. She reported the deepfake images to the AI chatbot, requesting their removal, but encountered delays and mixed results in the process. St Clair claimed that her account on a platform associated with Musk was affected following her complaint, resulting in a violation of terms of service.
In response to concerns raised by users and reports from the Internet Watch Foundation, which identified the misuse of Grok to create illicit content, Musk introduced a paid service for generating deepfakes. However, this move was criticized by the UK government for not adequately addressing the issue and being insensitive to victims of exploitation.
The controversy surrounding Grok stems from individuals exploiting its AI capabilities on a social platform to digitally alter images of individuals without their consent, placing them in compromising situations. Grok is developed by xAI, a company founded by Elon Musk that also owns the X platform, previously known as Twitter.
Ngaire Alexander from the Internet Watch Foundation confirmed the discovery of criminal imagery, involving children aged between 11 and 13, believed to be produced using the Grok tool. The situation has sparked public outcry and demands for stricter measures to prevent such misuse of technology.
