Ladan Jahankha finds fulfillment in her local running group, as it represents a long-awaited opportunity. Having previously resided in Iran, where women face significant restrictions in sports participation, Jahankha cherishes the freedom and experiences she now enjoys in St. John’s. Iranian women athletes are subject to strict dress codes and limited access to sporting events, as highlighted by the Center for Human Rights in Iran and recent incidents reported by the BBC.
Despite her past struggles to run in Tehran due to societal constraints, Jahankha now embraces running as a teacher in St. John’s. Encountering a colleague who shared her interest in running reignited her passion for the sport. With the support of a coach and a welcoming running community found on Facebook, Jahankha has found solace and camaraderie in her newfound pursuit.
Amid ongoing tensions stemming from the U.S.-Iran conflict, Jahankha views running as a means to alleviate stress and anxiety. She values the opportunities and freedom Canada offers, allowing her to partake in events like the recent Pride race and upcoming 5-kilometer race. Jahankha expresses gratitude for the newfound liberties and experiences she and her family have in Canada.
