A former prominent jockey, Luke Tarrant, is currently in custody facing three charges related to armed robbery. Tarrant, who is already serving a 12-month racing disqualification for a previous offense, was denied bail during his appearance before magistrates in Caloundra, Queensland, Australia. The charges against Tarrant include armed robbery, entering premises with criminal intent, and possession of dangerous drugs, according to reports. Robbery carries a severe penalty of up to 14 years in prison and potentially life imprisonment for cases involving armed robbery or violence. Tarrant is scheduled to appear in court again on March 19.

The 31-year-old jockey, who has achieved 502 wins and claimed victory in prestigious races, such as the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic in 2015, last competed in August. Notably, Tarrant was previously suspended for six months in 2020 for a physical altercation with another jockey and was later disqualified for a year in October for failing to cooperate with a stewards’ inquiry regarding health assessment forms.

The Racing Integrity Commission in Queensland highlighted the seriousness of Tarrant’s actions, emphasizing the importance of maintaining integrity in the sport. Despite multiple opportunities to respond, Tarrant did not provide any plea or submissions during the inquiry. Consequently, the Commission imposed a 12-month disqualification starting from October 8, 2025, to October 8, 2026.
