Moving to a new city can be a rollercoaster of emotions, as Caitlyn Moony discovered when she relocated to Vancouver from Johannesburg in 2018. Initially drawn to the city’s beauty and promises of a vibrant lifestyle, her expectations clashed with reality over time.

Struggling to find her place in Vancouver, Moony faced challenges like job hunting without “Canadian experience” and adapting to the slower pace of life. Loneliness and a lack of community exacerbated her feelings of isolation. These sentiments were magnified during the pandemic, prompting her eventual return to London, where she found solace in the bustling energy of the city.

Despite her love for London, Moony realized that Vancouver had quietly shaped her into a more introspective and grounded individual. Reflecting on her time in both cities, she now sees Vancouver in a new light – imperfect yet comforting. Embracing the city’s quirks, she longs to reconnect with it, seeking to rediscover a sense of belonging and acceptance.

As she lands back in Vancouver, Moony hopes for a fresh start, ready to rekindle her relationship with the city she once struggled to love. Time and distance have brought a newfound appreciation for Vancouver’s unique charm and the opportunity to carve out her place within its dynamic landscape.
