Germany’s president has raised concerns about the actions of Donald Trump, accusing the US of disregarding international laws that it once helped establish. Frank-Walter Steinmeier criticized Trump’s behavior, stating that the US has deviated significantly from acceptable norms. He emphasized the importance of upholding values to prevent a scenario where the world descends into chaos, with powerful nations exploiting weaker ones.

Steinmeier highlighted the diminishing respect for international law and the erosion of the global order, noting that medium-sized and smaller nations are increasingly vulnerable to the actions of larger powers. The German president’s remarks come amidst growing tensions sparked by allegations that Trump authorized a military operation to apprehend Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

In a separate development, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed concerns about the US’s shifting stance towards its allies and its deviation from established international norms. Keir Starmer and European leaders also cautioned against US intervention in Greenland, stressing the importance of respecting the sovereignty of nations in determining their own futures.

The escalating situation has prompted calls from a group of MPs to exclude the US from the upcoming World Cup due to Trump’s actions in Venezuela and his confrontational rhetoric towards various countries. The motion, spearheaded by Labour MP Brian Leishman, criticizes the international community and sports bodies for what it perceives as double standards in dealing with geopolitical issues.

Leishman underscored the need for consistency in upholding international law, citing concerns over the treatment of Russia and the recent events in Venezuela. He called for a unified approach in addressing breaches of sovereignty and ensuring accountability for all nations involved.
