Windows 10 official support ended nearly half a year ago, leaving many laptops without crucial security updates. This situation exposes these devices to potential cyber threats and malware attacks. While newer laptops can transition to Windows 11 through Microsoft’s update program, older PCs may not meet the system requirements, presenting users with a challenging dilemma.

Users facing this predicament can opt to persist with unsupported laptops, pay for extended updates (ESUs), or invest in new devices pre-installed with Windows 11. However, a new alternative has emerged for aging PCs, aiming to prolong their lifespan and prevent them from being discarded. Google has teamed up with refurbished electronics retailer Back Market to introduce a USB kit featuring ChromeOS Flex software, enabling the transformation of old laptops into Chromebook-style devices.

ChromeOS Flex serves as a lightweight operating system suitable for various older computers, granting users access to services like Chrome, Gmail, Docs, and the Android app store. This solution offers a cost-effective way to enhance device functionality without the need for a new laptop.

Although ChromeOS Flex has been available as a free download from Google, the new USB kits simplify the installation process, allowing users to test the system from the USB drive before committing to a full installation. The kits have quickly gained popularity, with high demand leading to them currently being out of stock.

In a blog post, Google stated, “Last October marked a significant moment for millions of computers as Windows 10 support ended, leaving users with the dilemma of either purchasing a new device or continuing to use an insecure, outdated one. To provide an alternative, Google has partnered with Back Market to offer the ChromeOS Flex USB Kit, enabling users to install a fast, secure, and free operating system to modernize their existing PCs or Macs.”

Priced at around £3, the kit includes a reusable USB stick, contributing to reducing electronic waste. Despite its affordability, the high demand for the kits has led to them being listed as out of stock on Back Market.

Google highlights that besides revitalizing old laptops, ChromeOS Flex can offer environmental benefits. By extending the use of already-manufactured devices, the software helps in minimizing electronic waste and reducing carbon emissions associated with producing new laptops. Additionally, ChromeOS is noted for its energy efficiency, consuming 19% less energy on average compared to similar systems.
