A Food Basics store will take the place of a Metro grocery store in Ottawa’s South Keys area this autumn, resulting in job losses for numerous employees. Metro Inc. stated that the conversion to Food Basics is aimed at better catering to the community’s needs. The decision surprised workers at the Southgate Metro, with long-time employee Justin Braganza expressing shock over the closure announcement in May. Despite questions about rent costs, Metro emphasized that the change was driven by local market requirements.
The closure affects 72 employees, who, under the collective agreement, cannot transfer to other Metro stores but can apply for positions at the new Food Basics. The new Food Basics store’s agreement mandates that a minimum number of former Southgate Metro employees be hired, with their seniority considered within Food Basics’ pay structure. However, this offers little solace to employees like Braganza, who lamented the lack of job opportunities like his current role as a meat cutter.
Customer reactions varied, with some expressing disappointment and concern for the affected workers. The United Food and Commercial Workers union negotiated additional options for members, including severance benefits and employment opportunities at the new Food Basics. Legal experts raised questions about the workforce shortage justification and the potential for labor disputes, highlighting the complexities of such transitions.
