Rumors are circulating that King Charles may soon visit the United States on an official royal trip, with discussions reportedly underway for the visit to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the US declaration of independence. However, it has been disclosed that the monarch might not experience the same level of grandeur as President Donald Trump did during his UK state visit in September.
White House staff secretary Will Scharff revealed that King Charles could potentially have to use a portable toilet during his stay, as renovations are being made to create a new ballroom in place of the East Wing for hosting foreign dignitaries. Currently, visiting state leaders are accommodated in elaborate tents on the South Lawn due to space limitations in the East Room.
Acknowledging the subpar conditions for hosting important foreign guests, Scharff stated that the situation does not reflect positively on the US. He compared the hospitality given to the US President at Windsor Castle when visiting the UK to the potential tent setup for the King’s visit to the US.
Reports suggest that the King’s visit could occur in April, marking the first visit by a British monarch since 2007. This trip would also be Prince Charles’s first visit to the US since his son Prince Harry relocated to California with Meghan in 2020, though any meeting between them during the visit is unlikely.
President Trump has expressed admiration for the royal family and sees them as instrumental in US-UK diplomatic relations. Following a previous state visit to the UK, Trump praised King Charles as a “great gentleman and a great King.” The upcoming visit is anticipated to strengthen ties between the two nations.
