The leader of the Labour Party has cautioned Vladimir Putin about the UK’s close monitoring of Russian activities in British waters following the sighting of a mysterious ship in the Channel.

Anna Turley, the Labour Party chair, expressed her support for Keir Starmer’s international efforts and the collaboration with allies to uphold international law. A vessel named Tavian was observed heading towards Finland near Guernsey, suspected to be linked to Putin’s clandestine maritime fleet circumventing trade restrictions on Russian oil.

In a statement to Sky News, Ms. Turley emphasized the Government’s vigilance in overseeing Russia’s actions in the region to safeguard citizens and uphold international norms. This development occurred shortly after the UK supported the US in seizing a Russian tanker in the North Atlantic, identified as part of Russia’s covert funding for the conflict in Ukraine.

Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander affirmed the UK’s commitment to working with global partners, such as the US, to counter Russian evasion of sanctions. The joint operation, which involved RAF surveillance aircraft and naval support, successfully intercepted the ship, previously known as Bella 1, as it sailed through waters near Scotland.

The US military’s European Command acknowledged the UK’s crucial support in the operation, emphasizing the joint effort to combat illicit financing fueling Russia’s military endeavors. Mr. Alexander stressed the importance of disrupting channels that support Putin’s war machinery, underscoring the necessity of international cooperation in addressing ongoing sanction violations by Russia.
