In 2026, the trade union movement’s leader has cautioned that unless people experience improved well-being, the Labour Party risks losing more ground to the Reform party. TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak emphasized the need for Keir Starmer to address the financial pressures impacting households as millions prepare to vote in next year’s elections across Scotland, Wales, and England. Nowak stressed the importance of Labour directly confronting Nigel Farage’s Reform party, warning that “working-class individuals cannot afford Reform.”
The focus on enhancing living standards is crucial, as failure to do so may lead individuals to heed Reform’s misleading pledges. A recent Deltapoll survey for The Mirror highlighted that the cost of living stands out as the most pressing concern for Britons and their families. Additionally, the survey revealed that voters prioritize Starmer addressing living costs in 2026, followed by healthcare and immigration issues.
Regarding government priorities, controlling the cost of living emerged as the top concern for 61% of respondents, followed by improving the NHS at 55% and reducing immigration at 41%. Growing the economy, cutting crime, and improving public services were deemed less critical by the surveyed individuals.
Nowak emphasized the importance of boosting confidence in the economy to counter Farage’s influence, underscoring the negative impacts of disillusionment with mainstream politics. He commended Starmer for denouncing Reform’s immigration policies as “racist” and highlighted the need for a strong stance against divisive rhetoric.
Acknowledging Labour’s past missteps, Nowak called for a focus on the party’s accomplishments and a shift away from constant apologies. He urged the government to prioritize living standards and demonstrate unwavering support for working-class communities.
Highlighting the significance of policies that benefit workers, Nowak emphasized the need for the government to uphold its commitments to improve employment rights. He stressed that addressing the economic challenges faced by the average person is essential for fostering a sense of financial security.
Looking ahead to 2026, the Prime Minister has pledged to address the cost of living as a top priority, with various initiatives set to be implemented. Despite concerns about household finances, the government aims to instill confidence through measures such as increasing policing, lifting benefit caps, and freezing rail fares.
Labour representatives echoed a commitment to alleviating the cost of living burden on families, emphasizing initiatives aimed at boosting wages and supporting working-class individuals nationwide. The party remains focused on ensuring tangible improvements in the financial well-being of the population.
