Police in Palm Coast, Florida, encountered a unique excuse from a man caught driving his convertible Corvette at 107 miles per hour. The driver, identified as Michael Stanek, attempted to justify his high speed by claiming he had an urgent appointment with his barber.
A deputy observed Stanek speeding and weaving through traffic on Interstate 95 before pulling him over. Body camera footage captured the moment Stanek was stopped, handcuffed, and questioned about his reckless driving behavior.
When asked by the officer why he was driving so fast, Stanek simply apologized and reiterated his need to reach his barber quickly. However, due to Florida’s new ‘super speeder’ law, which criminalizes speeds exceeding 50mph over the limit or 100mph, Stanek was informed that he would be spending the night in jail for endangering others with his dangerous speeding.
In a separate incident, a court heard how Christopher West, driving a black Vauxhall Astra, fatally struck 15-year-old Keely Morgan in Cardiff while allegedly speeding in a 30mph zone. West had been reportedly showing off to passengers before the tragic accident, resulting in Keely’s death at a zebra crossing.
Following a post-mortem examination that revealed Keely’s cause of death as “multiple blunt force injuries,” West was sentenced to 16 months in jail for causing death by careless driving and driving without insurance after tampering with his vehicle’s black box. Keely’s family expressed dissatisfaction with the sentence, stating that it did not reflect the magnitude of their loss. The courtroom erupted in emotion, with some family members leaving in protest at the verdict.
