Mercedes has been advised to finalize a contract extension for Kimi Antonelli despite the young driver’s recent challenges. Antonelli, an 18-year-old Italian, impressed in his Formula 1 debut at the Australian Grand Prix by finishing fourth in challenging weather conditions.
After stepping in to replace Lewis Hamilton, Antonelli continued with solid performances, including back-to-back sixth-place finishes in China and Japan. He also secured pole position at the Miami sprint race and achieved his first podium at the Canadian Grand Prix.
However, Antonelli’s form has declined in recent races during the European season due to both personal struggles and the increased difficulty of driving the upgraded Mercedes car. Despite a ninth-place finish at Monza, Team Principal Toto Wolff expressed disappointment in Antonelli’s race pace.
Wolff, who previously supported Antonelli despite setbacks, now acknowledges the need for improvement but remains confident in the young driver’s potential. Contract extensions for both Antonelli and George Russell at Mercedes for the 2026 season have been discussed but not finalized.
To provide stability for Antonelli, Sky Sports commentator David Croft suggests that Mercedes should expedite the contract process and boost the driver’s confidence. Croft believes Antonelli may benefit from reassurance and support from the team to overcome his current challenges.
Former champion Nico Rosberg commented on Wolff’s change in attitude towards Antonelli, emphasizing the importance of giving the young driver time and avoiding public criticism. Rosberg acknowledged Antonelli’s talent but highlighted the unexpected difficulties the driver is facing in his rookie year.
