The Met Office has issued a new amber weather warning for significant and continuous snowfall, advising residents in six areas to stock up on essential supplies.
The snow alert, affecting parts of central and eastern Scotland, will be in effect from 3 am until 2 pm tomorrow. This warning accompanies a broader yellow alert for ice and snow, impacting 51 regions in Scotland and northern England. The amber advisory cautions against driving in these hazardous conditions and recommends preparing with items like torches, batteries, and a mobile phone power pack.
According to the Met Office, a snow band will move in on Sunday morning, with anticipated snowfall of 2cm to 5cm at lower elevations, 10cm to 15cm above 150 meters, and 20cm to 30cm above 300 meters. The forecast also predicts strong winds leading to snow drifting and potential blizzard conditions with deep snowdrifts.
Specific regions under alert include Central, Tayside & Fife, Grampian, Highlands & Eilean Siar, East Midlands, North East England, North West England, Orkney & Shetland, SW Scotland, Lothian Borders, Strathclyde, West Midlands, and Yorkshire & Humber. The UK forecast for Sunday by the Met Office mentions wet and windy conditions, snow in the north, and a risk of icy surfaces due to freezing rain, along with strengthening coastal winds and milder weather in the west.
Meanwhile, a yellow ice warning remains effective until midday today for London, South East England, East Midlands, East of England, North West England, South West England, West Midlands, Yorkshire & Humber, and Wales, cautioning about refreezing snow, freezing fog, and wintry showers creating slippery surfaces.
Additionally, a separate yellow snow and ice warning in place from 5 pm yesterday until 11 am today covers Northern Ireland, expecting icy patches and snow on hilly terrains.
