Former England cricketer Monty Panesar has addressed the remarks made by Australia’s captain, Steve Smith, in the lead-up to the Ashes series. Panesar and Smith engaged in a verbal exchange prior to the First Test in Perth, which resulted in a swift defeat for the visiting team within two days.

The England team, led by Ben Stokes, faced an eight-wicket loss at the Optus Stadium and has now traveled to Brisbane for the Second Test at The Gabba. Prior to the commencement of the series, Panesar advised England to capitalize on the notorious ball-tampering scandal of 2018 to unsettle Australia and gain a strategic advantage.

Smith retaliated by mentioning Panesar’s appearance on BBC’s Celebrity Mastermind in 2019 regarding the former spinner’s comments. During a press conference, Smith diverted from cricket discussions, referring humorously to Panesar’s performance on the quiz show.

In response to Smith’s remarks, Panesar expressed surprise at the Australia captain’s knowledge of his quiz show answers before the Test match. Panesar found amusement in being able to unsettle Australians from the comfort of his sofa, hinting at a psychological advantage. Reflecting on the Test match outcome, Panesar noted the lack of media attention to his comments on the sandpaper scandal, suggesting it could be used as a psychological tactic by Ben Stokes and the England team.

Panesar acknowledged Smith’s cricketing prowess despite a modest performance in the match and praised his strategic decisions, including promoting Travis Head in the batting order. He emphasized the importance of England’s response to such tactics, leaving it to Stokes to decide on utilizing psychological strategies against Australia.

The ongoing exchange between Panesar and Smith highlights the competitive spirit leading up to the second Ashes Test match. Panesar shared his insights with BOYLE Sports on the evolving dynamics of the series, offering a unique perspective on the upcoming cricketing battle between England and Australia.

The Ashes series is scheduled to commence on November 21, with live coverage available on TNT Sports via discovery+ or Prime Video’s TNT Sports channel for fans eager to follow the highly anticipated cricket showdown.
