A mother recounts the distressing incident when her facial muscles became paralyzed following a routine tea consumption, mere days after delivering her baby girl. Karina Whyte, 30, welcomed daughter Mackenzie Whyte on August 8, only to experience facial numbness and drooping on the left side while enjoying a cup of tea just 10 days later.

Initially suspecting an allergic reaction, Karina rushed to the hospital fearing a stroke. Medical examination ruled out both possibilities, diagnosing her with Bell’s palsy, a condition causing temporary facial weakness or paralysis primarily affecting one side of the face, as explained by the NHS.

Subsequently, Karina underwent a five-day steroid treatment to manage the palsy. Coping with challenges such as water dribbling while drinking and the need to tape her eye shut during sleep, she shared the emotional impact of facing this ordeal alongside the demands of being a new mother and a single parent in Glenrothes, Fife, Scotland.

Utilizing TikTok to document her journey, Karina highlighted the added struggles of her situation, emphasizing the physical and emotional toll. Although optimistic about recovery, she acknowledged the persistent uncertainty. Despite the hardships, Karina encourages resilience, advocating for self-care and public awareness to support others enduring similar battles with facial paralysis.

NHS Scotland notes Bell’s palsy as a prevalent facial paralysis type in the UK, listing common symptoms. Karina’s story sheds light on the complexities of dealing with such conditions while navigating the responsibilities of motherhood and personal well-being.
