The NHS is urging specific groups to receive vaccinations as new health data reveals a resurgence of winter viruses. Recent statistics from NHS England show a 9% increase in flu-related hospital admissions in the past two weeks, reversing a previous decline. Additionally, the number of patients hospitalized with norovirus and Covid has risen compared to the previous week.

Despite the uptick in cases, the NHS has administered over 18.6 million flu vaccines this winter, surpassing last year’s figures by over half a million. With rising pressure on hospitals and ambulance services due to winter viruses, the NHS emphasizes that numerous flu vaccine appointments are still available for eligible individuals.

According to the NHS, flu poses a serious risk, especially to older individuals and those in high-risk categories. The NHS encourages those eligible to get vaccinated as there are still ample appointments open. Eligibility for a free flu jab extends to various groups, including individuals needing extra protection or living with someone who does.

NHS national medical director Professor Meghana Pandit warned that hospitals are facing increased admissions of flu and respiratory virus cases, exacerbated by cold weather-related health issues. Despite the challenges, healthcare teams are working diligently to provide care. Professor Pandit stresses the importance of seeking medical care as needed and highlights the ongoing availability of vaccination services for flu protection.

For individuals eligible for a free flu jab, there are multiple avenues to access the vaccine. Booking appointments can be done directly through GP surgeries or pharmacies, including online bookings or through the NHS app for individuals aged 18 and above. Some pharmacies offer the NHS vaccine at no cost and accept walk-ins without prior appointments, although availability may vary.

Further details on the flu vaccine and its components can be found on the NHS website.
