Health authorities have raised concerns about a significant rise in severe cases of a highly contagious illness. The UK Health Security Agency reported a 47% increase in norovirus infections in the first two weeks of 2026 compared to the previous monitoring period ending on 28 December.

Guidelines have been issued to promote proper hygiene practices to limit the spread of the virus, especially among individuals aged 65 and older. While the situation remains under control, outbreaks in healthcare settings are on the rise.

Experts emphasized the unpredictable nature of pathogens like influenza and norovirus, urging the public to adopt simple preventive measures such as regular handwashing. Alcohol-based sanitizers are ineffective against norovirus, so using soap and warm water for hand hygiene and bleach-based products for disinfecting surfaces are recommended.

Amy Douglas, Lead Epidemiologist at UKHSA, highlighted the importance of hand hygiene and surface cleaning to prevent further spread of the virus. She advised individuals with symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting to stay home and avoid preparing food for others to prevent transmission.

Norovirus symptoms typically include sudden onset of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, headache, and body aches. Those experiencing symptoms should refrain from attending school, work, hospitals, or care homes until they have been symptom-free for 48 hours.

While flu, COVID-19, and RSV levels have been decreasing, the public is urged to maintain preventive measures to sustain this trend. Adequate ventilation in indoor spaces can help reduce respiratory infections’ spread, and symptomatic individuals are advised to stay home.

Vaccination is recommended for high-risk groups to prevent severe illness and hospitalization. Preliminary data shows the flu vaccine is effective this year, underscoring the importance of getting vaccinated to safeguard against flu strains.

Dr. Alex Allen, Consultant Epidemiologist at UKHSA, cautioned against complacency, emphasizing the need to continue preventative measures and vaccination efforts to sustain the decline in respiratory virus cases.
