O2 has issued a new warning that may impact access to internet and messaging applications like WhatsApp for some users. This alert comes as the UK network, now under Virgin Media, prepares to phase out its older 3G technology in additional locations across the country.

The 3G signal from O2, now part of Virgin Media, has already been deactivated in various areas including Durham, Norwich, Telford, Guildford, Watford, and Torquay, with parts of Scotland next in line for the switch-off.

Starting November 5, 2025, individuals with devices that only support 3G will no longer be able to access data services, meaning no sending emails, reading WhatsApp messages, or browsing websites without Wi-Fi. Basic phone calls and SMS texting will still function, but data services will cease.

Residents in eastern regions such as Aberdeen and Dundee will experience the discontinuation of 3G services first, with O2 planning to completely phase out 3G nationwide by the end of 2025.

Reasons for the 3G Shutdown

The decision to turn off 3G stems from its outdated nature, introduced in 2003 and now inefficient for modern demands. Maintaining 3G is costly and occupies valuable bandwidth that could enhance 4G and 5G network capabilities. While 3G offers speeds around 3Mbps, 4G and 5G can deliver speeds up to 100Mbps.

Impact on Affected Users

Most consumers now possess 4G and 5G-compatible devices, minimizing the number of individuals affected by the 3G phase-out. O2 is offering some 3G users free upgrades to 4G devices, and those without 4G-ready devices can purchase new ones at discounted rates. Other mobile networks like EE and Vodafone have already discontinued 3G services to optimize network efficiency.

Virgin Media O2’s Chief Technology Officer, Jeanie York, emphasized the impending transition away from 3G towards faster and more reliable 4G and 5G networks. Customers in Scotland and across the UK are encouraged to upgrade to 4G or 5G devices promptly to maintain mobile data access after the 3G shutdown.
