Exhausted healthcare workers at Arrowe Park Hospital in Merseyside have shared a heartbreaking incident where a woman was left to pass away alone on a stretcher in a busy A&E corridor. The hospital, under Wirral University Teaching Hospital Trust (WUTH), is facing an overwhelming surge in patient numbers, with daily visits exceeding 330 and peaking at 370 in December.

Staff members described the distressing scene of an elderly woman who arrived by ambulance and was placed in a corridor due to space and staff shortages. Tragically, she passed away without receiving attention. The situation has reached a critical point, with one staff member expressing shock at the deteriorating conditions leading to patient harm.

The winter season has exacerbated the crisis, with an A&E staff member highlighting the increasing patient load, inadequate staffing levels, and the strain on resources. The hospital’s efforts to address the crisis by opening a new medical ward within the department have only added to the burden on already exhausted staff.

The escalating pressure has resulted in senior staff taking stress leave, leaving a reliance on inexperienced and agency workers to fill the gaps. The morale among staff is at an all-time low, with reports of emotional breakdowns and instances of patient abuse towards healthcare workers.

While these challenges are not unique to Arrowe Park Hospital, staff members are calling for clearer guidance from the hospital trust on addressing the situation. The urgent and emergency services at the hospital are currently rated as ‘requires improvement’ by the Care Quality Commission.

The trust acknowledges the high demand on its emergency department and the longer waiting times, attributing it to a nationwide issue within the NHS. Additional beds and wards have been opened with proper staffing to manage the surge in patients. The trust encourages staff to report incidents and actively monitors demand and staffing levels.

To alleviate the strain on emergency services, the trust urges the public to only visit the Emergency Department in case of emergencies. Additionally, they emphasize the importance of taking preventive measures such as vaccinations, staying healthy, and caring for vulnerable individuals during this time of year.
