Millions of households subscribed to Sky, Freeview, or Virgin Media will soon experience a reduction in available content as two popular children’s channels, Pop and Tiny Pop, are set to be discontinued starting December 2025. These channels, known for airing shows like Pokémon, LEGO Friends, and Hello Kitty, cater to younger audiences with round-the-clock programming.
The decision to cease broadcasting these channels is primarily driven by a lack of commercial viability in the current UK kids’ TV market landscape. According to Paul Dunthorne, MD of Narrative, the closure of the Pop channel is a result of the dwindling commercial value in the children’s TV sector over the past decade.
While the traditional TV channels are being phased out, the content will still be accessible through online platforms known as FAST channels. These services will require an internet-enabled television for viewing, offering a digital alternative to the linear broadcasting model.
On a positive note, Sky has announced the addition of Disney Jr. to its programming lineup, aimed at children aged 2-6. With a host of popular shows like Mickey Mouse Clubhouse+, Marvel’s Spidey and his Amazing Friends, and Bluey, Disney Jr. is set to bring a new wave of entertainment options to young viewers. The channel will be included in the Sky Kids package starting November 13, accessible through various Sky devices and the Sky Go app, as well as on-demand viewing and streaming on Disney+.
