Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is facing renewed pressure to conduct wartime elections, despite the constitutional prohibition on holding them during martial law. The call for elections comes from Mykhailo Fedorov, the former defense minister, who was recently ousted from his position.
Fedorov emphasized the need for Ukraine to establish a legal and safe mechanism to allow for a democratic process to resume amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia. While some argue that holding elections presently is impractical due to the ongoing war, the political implications of the demand for change cannot be overlooked.
Tymofiy Mylovanov, a former government minister, noted that Fedorov’s call has turned the prospect of elections into a significant domestic political issue but has not advanced the likelihood of immediate elections. He suggested that Zelenskyy may announce plans for future elections if pressured by ongoing protests.
Before his dismissal, Fedorov, known for his reformist views and technological expertise, served as a key figure in Zelenskyy’s administration. His removal triggered protests across Ukraine, urging Zelenskyy to reconsider the decision. Despite declining alternative government roles, Fedorov insisted on his stance and ultimately left his position.
The feasibility of holding elections amidst the current conflict remains in question. Dmytro Koziatynskyi, a combat medic, expressed doubts about the practicality of organizing a vote given the challenges posed by the war. Similarly, Lesia Bidochko, a policy fellow, criticized Fedorov’s election proposal as lacking a realistic implementation strategy.
Election discussions have drawn skepticism from Ukrainian lawmakers, with Lesia Vasylenko deeming it unrealistic under the current circumstances. Constitutional changes would be necessary for any election process, which she views as a daunting task during martial law.
Zelenskyy has yet to directly address Fedorov’s election call. However, his communications adviser emphasized that the ongoing conflict with Russia remains a priority. The potential risks associated with wartime elections, including threats to national unity and external interference, have been highlighted by experts cautioning against rushing into such a decision.
