Marco Rubio, the United States Secretary of State, is scheduled to hold discussions with Danish officials regarding President Donald Trump’s proposal to acquire Greenland. Rubio mentioned to the press today that the meeting is set for next week.
This development follows the White House’s confirmation of Trump’s interest in “taking control” of Greenland before the end of his term. While Trump reportedly prefers a purchase agreement with Denmark for Greenland, the Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, stated that if Denmark rejects the offer, Trump is prepared to consider using the US military to secure the territory.
Leavitt emphasized that President Trump views obtaining Greenland as a critical national security objective for the United States, crucial for deterring adversaries in the Arctic region. She added that Trump and his team are exploring various strategies to achieve this foreign policy goal, including the potential deployment of the US military as an option available to the Commander in Chief.
Trump’s stance on Greenland has drawn criticism from European leaders, with Denmark cautioning that a territorial acquisition by the US could jeopardize the NATO alliance. In response, Trump defended his position on Truth Social, suggesting that NATO might not provide support when needed. He also highlighted the historical backing the US received from NATO following the 9/11 attacks.
In his social media post, Trump expressed disappointment over Norway, a NATO member, not awarding him the Nobel Prize, and warned that China and Russia would not fear NATO without US involvement. However, he affirmed the US’s commitment to NATO, stating, “We will always stand by NATO, even if reciprocity is lacking.”
This development comes amid escalating tensions over Trump’s Greenland initiative, with geopolitical implications for the Arctic region and international alliances.
