A recent report from consumer group Which? has revealed that the major mobile networks EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2 are falling behind their smaller competitors in terms of overall performance. The report, based on a survey of over 5,000 smartphone users across the country, highlighted that lesser-known networks often offer better value and superior customer service.

According to Which?, the survey aimed to assess which providers are meeting customer expectations and which ones are not. The results showed that the traditional “Big Four” networks are trailing behind many smaller rivals in terms of customer satisfaction and service quality.

In the rankings, Talkmobile claimed the top spot, followed by Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY. Among the major providers, EE performed the best, ranking ninth, while O2 and Three were among the lowest-rated networks.

Price emerged as a significant factor in the report, with customers on the major networks paying an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only deal, compared to just £9 for users on smaller networks. Despite the lower prices, many smaller providers utilize the infrastructure of major networks, ensuring customers can access similar signal coverage and service quality without the premium costs associated with well-known brands.

Switching providers was highlighted as a straightforward process, with some customers able to transition to a new network in as little as 10 minutes. One Which? member shared their positive experience of switching from O2 to a more cost-effective SMARTY plan, saving around £200 annually.

Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, emphasized that smaller providers consistently outperform major mobile firms by offering better customer service and more affordable deals. She encouraged customers nearing the end of their contracts to consider switching to providers that offer better value and service quality.

The report also included full scores from Which?, with Talkmobile leading at 83%, followed by Tesco Mobile at 81%, Giffgaff and SMARTY both at 79%, and Voxi at 79%. The rankings showcased a clear trend of smaller providers excelling in customer satisfaction and pricing compared to the larger networks.
