A prominent supermarket chain has introduced a specialized ‘small steak’ catering to individuals utilizing weight loss injections, offering smaller portions while ensuring nutritional balance in their diet.
Ocado’s new ‘weight management’ section showcases products from Marks & Spencer’s latest ‘nutrient-dense’ range, specifically designed for those undergoing GLP-1 weight loss treatments. The selection includes dishes with fewer than 600 calories but rich in protein.
In addition to the Turf and Clover small extra lean steak (100g), the aisle features M&S high protein cottage cheese, two beef burgers, nutrient-dense Romesco chicken, Huel ready-to-drink black edition chocolate 500ml, chicken teriyaki, and turkey lentil bolognese meals.
Ocado now joins Marks & Spencer, Waitrose, and Greggs in promoting fresh product lines tailored for individuals using GLP-1 medications.
Statistics show that as of July last year, up to 2.5 million UK adults were utilizing weight loss injections. However, a survey by Ocado revealed that only 40% of shoppers understood how GLP-1 drugs, known by brand names like Mounjaro or Wegovy, aid in weight loss.
Furthermore, 73% of respondents expressed interest in identifying foods and dishes that could help maintain lean muscle mass during their weight loss journey.
Charlie Parker, senior nutritionist at Ocado Retail, emphasized the importance of incorporating diet and nutrition into weight loss discussions as weight loss medications become more prevalent. Customers are increasingly seeking high-protein, high-fiber foods and balanced meal options to support healthier weight loss journeys and reduced appetites.
Recent data from Ocado spanning late December to early January showed a significant surge in demand for protein-rich essentials, with steak sales up by 63%, chicken by 88%, cottage cheese by 138%, and liquid egg whites by 82%.
The survey, conducted by Savanta, polled 2,134 adults across the UK in December.
