The father of the owner of the Swiss bar where 40 individuals lost their lives in a New Year fire has expressed that his son holds accountability for the tragic incident. Jacques Moretti’s father, Jean, made these statements as his son and daughter-in-law faced legal actions for charges including manslaughter by negligence, bodily harm by negligence, and arson by negligence.

Mr. Moretti Sr. acknowledged his son’s responsibility due to his ownership of the establishment but emphasized that the determination of guilt is pending judicial review. He affirmed their commitment to cooperating with the justice system and highlighted their integrity as law-abiding citizens who mourn the loss of family members and loved ones.

Describing Jacques as a dedicated worker profoundly impacted by the fire, Jean mentioned that their residence is now under police protection amidst growing public outrage over the calamity, which also resulted in 116 injuries.

In response to the national day of mourning in Switzerland, Jacques was placed in pre-trial detention following interrogation by prosecutors, while his wife, Jessica, underwent questioning and was subsequently released. Mrs. Moretti expressed deep sorrow for the victims and those affected by the tragedy, offering apologies for the unforeseen events that unfolded at their establishment.

The investigation into the fire’s origins in the bar’s basement, allegedly triggered by champagne bottles with party sparklers near flammable sound insulation foam, continues. Concerns have been raised regarding the lack of fire safety inspections at the bar since 2019, involving scrutiny of both the bar owners and relevant authorities. The incident claimed lives from 19 different nationalities with 83 individuals still receiving medical care.

Survivors of the tragedy delivered poignant speeches at a memorial service attended by French President Emmanuel Macron, reflecting on the harrowing experiences and the solidarity in the face of adversity. The young speakers emphasized the need for resilience and collective action in the aftermath of the devastating event.

As Switzerland mourned the loss of the 40 victims, symbolic gestures of remembrance were observed nationwide, underscoring the profound impact of the tragedy on the community. President of the Valais State Council, Mathias Reynard, offered condolences and reassurance to the bereaved families, emphasizing the enduring memory of those who perished in the tragic incident.
