A police mix-up led to confusion when a teenage boy woke from a coma and revealed his identity, dispelling the initial report of his death in a tragic crash. The incident occurred in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, where 17-year-old Trevor Wynn was mistakenly identified as the victim, while the actual deceased were 18-year-old Joshua Johnson and a 17-year-old girl involved in the accident. The police corrected the error after Trevor regained consciousness and provided his name and details.

Following the revelation, formal identification procedures were reinitiated, confirming Trevor’s survival and his need for specialized care. Prior to this clarification, heartfelt tributes were shared online for Trevor, and a fundraising effort had collected £840 to support his family. The mix-up was uncovered when Trevor emerged from a coma and accurately identified himself, sparking disbelief among his loved ones and the community.

The mistaken identification had prompted funeral arrangements for Trevor, including floral tributes at Valley Young People’s Centre in Worksop. Trevor, a student at North Notts College, was expected to be remembered at a service scheduled at St Anne’s Church in Worksop. The unexpected turn of events caused distress to both families involved, leading to an internal police review and engagement with specialist agencies to offer support.

The incident also resulted in two arrests related to the crash, with an 18-year-old held for causing death by dangerous driving and a 19-year-old for allegedly obstructing justice. Meanwhile, a charity boxing event organized by Jonathan raised funds for Trevor’s family, with donations exceeding £1,000 redirected towards rehabilitation costs. The community grapples with the repercussions of the mistaken identity, emphasizing the need for clarity and support for all affected parties.
