A family is sharing their heartbreak after their teenage daughter passed away due to a blood clot triggered by using the contraceptive pill. Áine Rose Hurst, 19, initially mistook a severe headache for a hangover but tragically succumbed two days later.

During an inquiry last month, it was revealed that Áine had been advised to stop taking the pill due to high blood pressure, but her GP later prescribed it again. Her parents, Graham, 52, and Kerry, are advocating for caution among young women regarding the contraceptive pill’s potential risks and are advocating for changes in NHS protocols. To raise awareness, they have established ARCS – The Áine Rose Contraceptive Safety Foundation in her honor.

Kerry reminisces about Áine as a caring, beautiful girl who cherished her family. Áine, the only daughter of Graham and Kerry, grew up happily alongside her brother Charlie in Bolton, Greater Manchester. She excelled in school, had numerous friends, and enjoyed dance classes.

Áine pursued beauty studies in college and secured an apprenticeship in a call center as a teenager. With a strong bond with her family, she often organized gatherings and quiz nights. Kerry fondly recalls Áine’s ambition, humor, and zest for life.

In a tragic turn of events, Áine’s health deteriorated after resuming the contraceptive pill following a brief medical hiatus. Subsequently, she experienced a fatal blood clot and passed away at just 19 years old. Her family, devastated by the loss, seeks to spread awareness about the pill’s potential dangers and advocate for improved healthcare guidelines to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Following Áine’s funeral, her family founded ARCS to educate others about contraceptive safety. An official inquiry cited the contraceptive pill as a possible contributor to Áine’s untimely demise. Kerry emphasizes the importance of warning young women about contraceptive pill risks and urges for enhanced medical assessments for those with prior health concerns.

Despite their profound grief, Graham and Kerry hope that their advocacy efforts will help save lives in Áine’s memory.
