Nicolas Kicker decided to withdraw from his quarter-final match against Gustavo Heide at an ATP Challenger Tour event in Florianopolis, Brazil, just as he faced a critical match point. Kicker had lost the first set 6-2 and was trailing 5-1 in the second set when he opted to end the match.

During the seventh game while serving, with the score tied at deuce, Heide gained the advantage. Instead of contesting the match point, Kicker chose to concede defeat by shaking hands with the chair umpire and his opponent.

Kicker, who is 33 years old and a former world No.78, holds the unfortunate record of being the highest-ranked tennis professional convicted of match-fixing, resulting in a six-year suspension in 2018. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) imposed a three-year suspension, with the provision that it could be reduced if no further violations occurred. He was found guilty of manipulating two separate Challenger tournament matches in 2015.

Following an appeal, Kicker’s suspension was shortened by four months after he collaborated with the ITIA on an educational initiative. He contributed to an instructional video for the ITIA, detailing his involvement in match-fixing and cautioning other players about the consequences.

Reflecting on his past actions, Kicker expressed regret, acknowledging that his career took a downturn due to a single mistake made in 2015. He admitted to depending on his parents for financial support to sustain his tennis career.

Kicker recounted how he was approached through Facebook by someone offering financial assistance and access to a vehicle in Buenos Aires, only to later reveal themselves as part of a group of bettors who wanted him to manipulate a match.

Despite his remorse, Kicker recognizes that his reputation in the tennis world has been tarnished, and he continues to struggle with the repercussions of his actions.
