In light of these challenges, the year 2026 sees us collaborating with Tesco Mobile, a sponsor of Safer Internet Day, to promote open discussions within families through The Family Chat initiative. The aim is to facilitate transparent conversations at home about smartphone usage and online safety, aiming to alleviate the complexity of the situation.
Renowned author and podcaster, Giovanna Fletcher, a parent to three boys aged seven, nine, and 11, along with her husband Tom, will engage with parents and children to address the hurdles they encounter in the digital realm.
The inaugural family conversation delves into the realm of AI, emphasizing the significance of Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub as a vital tool in supporting parents with children aged up to 18.
Similar to many families, the Karleys – comprised of Anna, Emmanuel, and their children Joshua (13), Isaac (14), and Ruby (17) – heavily rely on their devices for connectivity. Nonetheless, the parents confess to struggling with discerning AI, which can pose safety risks.
Anna candidly admits, “I struggle to identify AI. There have been instances where I’ve been impressed with pictures, only for my kids to point out, ‘That’s AI, Mom!'” Even distinguishing between real and manipulated content proves challenging for them.
Joshua remarks, “Platforms like TikTok are flooded with AI content that appears remarkably authentic.”
With academic tasks increasingly shifting online, often aided by AI-generated research, the Karleys and Giovanna are adapting to this new educational landscape.
Giovanna observes, “With my eldest now in secondary school, assignments are predominantly computer-based. As parents, our focus should not be on condemning AI’s use in homework but on evaluating its application continually.”
