Shoe repair chain Timpson has introduced a new service allowing customers to trade in their mobile phones. Partnering with gadget resell company musicMagpie and its parent company AO, Timpson now offers a quick cash exchange for unwanted handsets at its stores.
Recent research indicates that 73% of UK adults possess unused smartphones at home, with an average trade-in worth of approximately £250, totaling an estimated £10 billion in unused smartphone value. Despite various online resell options, Timpson aims to cater to individuals who prefer face-to-face transactions, although alternative high street options already exist.
A survey revealed that 68% of individuals favor trading in devices in person, with 25% emphasizing the importance of immediate payment. Timpson and musicMagpie initially piloted the trade-in service four months ago and have since expanded it to over 1,300 Timpson stores nationwide.
John Roberts, CEO and founder of AO World, highlighted the simplicity of trading in old tech through the “Take it to Timpson” initiative, providing customers the opportunity to swiftly receive cash for their old smartphones at numerous Timpson sites.
The collaboration between musicMagpie’s refurbishment expertise and Timpson’s extensive network aims to help customers unlock the value in their old tech instantly, promoting affordability and sustainability. Steve Oliver, managing director of musicMagpie, expressed excitement over the partnership’s broadened reach and convenience for customers.
Sid Hubbard, group director of Timpson, emphasized the company’s longstanding commitment to repairing goods and extending this service to smartphone trade-ins in partnership with musicMagpie. This additional offering enhances the high street experience for Timpson customers, further solidifying their reputation as a trusted and customer-friendly brand.
