Tragedy struck as a mother and her 15-year-old daughter passed away after reportedly consuming a tainted Christmas meal.

Antonella Di Ielsi, aged 50, and Sara Di Vita, aged 15, are believed to have ingested fish, mussels, and mushrooms during their holiday dinner, leading to their untimely deaths within a short period of time.

It is suspected by authorities that they developed fulminant hepatitis, which is a severe form of acute liver failure, due to food poisoning. Symptoms such as nausea and abdominal pain manifested shortly after the meal in Pietracatella, Italy.

Sara was taken to the emergency room twice before being discharged. However, her condition deteriorated, leading to her passing at Cardarelli Hospital at 11 pm on Saturday. Antonella was hospitalized shortly after exhibiting similar symptoms, as per a report by The Mirror US.

Vincenzo Cuzzone, a physician from Cardarelli Hospital, stated to Il Messaggero, “The medical situation took an unusually rapid turn, resulting in death despite our best efforts. The initial symptoms appeared post-meal, but this information is based on fragmented details provided by shocked family members.”

Upon arrival at the hospital, Sara exhibited general symptoms, according to the doctor.

The sudden and rapid progression of the illness prompted Antonella’s hospitalization as a precaution. The doctor added, “Following her demise and the swift progression of events, we advised the family to admit her mother to the hospital as well due to reported similar symptoms. We endeavored to anticipate the situation, but unfortunately, it proved insufficient.”

Reports indicate that the family’s patriarch, Ganni Di Vita, aged 55, exhibited identical symptoms and is currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit at Spallanzani Hospital in Rome. Their 18-year-old daughter is under observation, with the doctor noting, “It appears she did not dine with them that evening.”

Authorities collected food samples from the household, including both canned goods and fresh produce, to determine the potential source of contamination. An investigation
